Most insurance companies have Hospital Scales. Depending on the hospital scale stipulated by your policy, you would be allowed to use different hospitals as graded by the insurer. Normally there are three scales, but some insurers offer four. Each scale will provide you with a higher level of accommodation than the scale below. You may also receive higher levels of benefit, as some companies directly link their benefit levels to the level of cover on your policy. What happens if I use a hospital in another Scale? Each hospital generally has an “out of scale” benefit. This means that should you want to use a hospital in a higher scale than you are insured for, or a hospital not listed by the insurer, then the insurer will allow you a certain amount of money per night to cover all your treatment. This allowance tends to vary between £200 and £600 per night, depending on your hospital scale. However, these are relatively small amounts compared to the cost of accommodation and treatment in higher-grade hospitals. Some insurers operate a different system. They will either pay the full amount, or offer to pay a percentage of the total costs involved in using a hospital in a higher scale. Speak to an adviser if Hospital Scales are a concern to you.... |
