I am looking to book a family holiday, I am unsure about what is mandatory and what is not. Do I really need travel insurance? Although not mandatory in the eyes of the law, travel insurance is a highly recommended purchase. The plan does more than simply replace lost luggage, it pays medical bills, legal fees, and repatriation to another country, air ambulance, and liability cover, loss of passport, money and travel companions. Equally, if travelling within Europe, you should also take out a EHIC (European Health Insurance Card) as this will provide an extension of your NHS state benefits, and can often reduce or remove excesses on a European Travel Insurance plan. The Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) deals with about three million consular enquiries and supports some 75,000 Brits in difficulty abroad each year, from visiting those who have been hospitalised or arrested, to rescuing citizens from forced marriages.
