Spending more time in the sun, enjoying a more selective range of food, fresh air, clean water and good company… you can understand why in excess of 2,000 a week leave the UK to settle overseas. Popular destinations continue to be France, Spain, Cyprus, Australia and the United States of America. However, many people do not allow themselves time to understand what can be a complex subject before committing to a move. Some countries offer excellent State Healthcare Systems (like our National Health Service), and in some cases, such as the USA, they rely on Health Insurance to fill the gap. Whatever your reasons for moving, you should first take some time to review your healthcare position – as it could prove to be an expensive burden. A classic example has to be our close relations to France, still the most popular destination for people leaving the UK. Affordable property and a generally high standard of living make France the ideal place to relocate to. However, following recent reforms in France, many people have found themselves in a difficult position.
Retiring If your intention is to retire to another country, you may be able to transfer some of your current UK benefits to assist. Predominately within Europe (http://www.dh.gov.uk/en/Healthcare/International/EuropeanUnion/index.htm) , persons can effectively passport their NHS entitlement to the new country of residence. However, you must know what you are doing to ensure this works and you do not fall foul of local laws… If this is the case, we recommend that you speak to the Department of Work and Pensions to ensure you have the correct paperwork and are eligible for cover to be granted. You can contact the Department of Work and Pensions – DWP by the following means: DEPARTMENT OF WORKS AND PENSIONS OVERSEAS BRANCH MEDICAL BENEFITS SECTION ROOM TC 001 LONGBENTON NEWCASTLE UPON TYNE NE98 1YX Tel: +44 (0)191 218 1999 Fax: +44 (0)191 218 737 You may be eligible to continue your state benefit entitlement by using one of the following E-forms, all available from the DWP at the contact details shown above. |
