Brits in the dark on medical costs Print E-mail
HeartA study into public attitude of the NHS has revealed that many Britons underestimate the cost of treatment they receive. Legal & General asked more than 5,000 people to estimate the cost of six common medical procedures, including cataract removal, varicose vein treatment, hernia repair, hip and knee replacements and heart bypass.


 

The results show that the public underestimates the cost of common medical treatments by a third (38%), and some treatments, such as cataract removal, were undervalued by up to 58%. Findings also showed that young people were consistently the least clued up on the cost of treatment, with 18 to 29 year olds undervaluing the treatment by 47%, compared to the over 50s who estimate the cost at 35% less.

The NHS and private medical insurance provide invaluable services which it would appear people may take for granted.”
