Personal Plans - Medical Insurance (PMI)

Before you can decide which type of cover would best suit your needs, you must first understand how your policy is structured. To keep matters simple, most insurers use similar phrases and descriptions so it is easier to compare one policy with another. The core components that go into making your plan are; In-patient, Day-patient, Out-patient. However many insurers have tailored plans to better meet their customers expectations. Jargon Buster: In-patient: In-patient treatment is treatment which for medical reasons means you have to stay in hospital overnight or for longer. Day-patient: Day patient treatment is treatment which for medical reasons means you have to go into a hospital or day-patient unit because you need a period of clinically-supervised recovery but do not have to stay overnight. Out-patient: Out patient treatment is treatment which is given at hospital, consulting room or out-patient clinic where you do not go in for day-patient or in-patient treatment. Diagnostic tests and scans: These range from basic pathology (blood), radiology (x-rays) and other tests such as ECG’s. Hi-tech diagnostics can include MRI (magnetic resonance imaging), CT (computerised tomography) and PET(positron emission tomography). Psychiatric: Treatment for a psychiatric condition which consider acute and therefore treatable. Treatment may involve treatment at a specialist psychiatric hospital or similar clinic. Complimentary medicine: Out-patient treatment for an acute condition by a registered therapist or practitioner. Common medicines covered include; Acupuncture, Chiropractic, Homeopathy, Osteopathy and Physiotherapy. Additional Services: Additional services added to a policy can include benefits like Parental accommodation, NHS cash benefits, GP services, Hospice benefit, GP help lines and other stress counselling help lines and services.
