Travel is something many of us take for granted, whether as a cheap holiday, visiting family members or even on business. And as we know, all sensible travellers take Travel Insurance before they fly… However, if you have a medical condition, you might find it more difficult to obtain travel insurance at a sensible premium. We heard some real horror stories whereby people have booked their holiday and arranged the insurance at a later stage, only to be quoted more than the cost of the holiday to insure it, due to an existing medical condition. If left too late, you may not be able to cancel your holiday or trip without financial penalties… Depending upon the severity of the condition concerned, you may be declined altogether… Why do some insurers exclude conditions or charge so much more? If you consider that travel insurance like many other insurances relies upon a volume of premium to make it work. Consider, that the week trip to Spain would probably cost between £25 and £35 to insurer, and if you were taken ill or involved in an accident, it could cost the insurer tens or even hundreds of thousands of pounds… you can understand them being picky. If a person declares that they have an existing condition, it posses a much higher risk to the insurer and the margins involved are not big enough to absorb the costs. Therefore, the insurer will either have to exclude the condition or charge more to cover it. Some insurers are better at managing this than others, hence the massive variations in premiums offered.
