| Self-Pay - Private Surgery | |
|
Despite a vast selection of insurance products able to meet most expectations, more and more people are deciding against insurance and favouring ‘Self Pay’ and paying for private surgery themselves. Initially, most of us would think it is more expensive and difficult to arrange this, however in the majority of cases; it is possible to purchase surgical procedures for less than some of the leading insurers. Why is this? The main instigator is cost. Although insurance companies are able to negotiate ‘volume discounts’ with hospitals and clinics, they also tend to create as many problems for the hospital, surgeons’ and anaesthetists’ as bills are disputed, invoicing lost and payments not made in time. Therefore, when a potential customer walks into reception and is prepared to purchase a packaged price offered by the hospital, the hospital is very keen to accept. In most cases, the procedure has to be paid in advance, either by cheque or credit card, which immediately proves attractive to the hospital. Contained within the package price is a margin to allow for clinical problems, and if the procedure goes smoothly as most do, again the hospital benefits. Spreading the cost? Many hospitals are now able to offer some form of finance, either directly or via a third party. This means you can agree to spread your costs whilst still benefiting from prompt, private treatment. As more and more Medical Insurance policies integrate No Claims Discounts into their terms, some would argue that surgery finance is no different as following a claim, your policy renewal premium would likely rise by a greater amount than you had anticipated. Clearly, medical insurance does provide more of a blanket of reassurance, but the costs speak for themselves and more and more of us are exploring the alternatives. Treatment Overseas? In some cases, travelling further a filed to receive treatment can also pay dividends, as dependant upon the type of treatment you are seeking, you could also benefit from a short break abroad while receiving your treatments. This is very common in dental work and increasing in other areas of elective surgery.
